THE METHOD IS THE METHOD.

A Reformer does not make something Pilates.

Neither does a Cadillac, a Chair, or a collection of exercises that happen to resemble Pilates.

The apparatus is a tool within a much larger system. The method lies in how that system is understood, taught, connected, progressed, and adapted to the individual body.

This is why lineage matters.

Pilates was traditionally passed from teacher to teacher through years of observation, practice, correction, repetition, and mentorship. What is transmitted through that relationship is far more than an exercise repertoire. It is an understanding of why an exercise is taught, when it belongs, what should precede it, what should follow it, what the apparatus is asking of the body, and when a teacher needs to modify or change direction.

The principles give the work its integrity: breath, centering, concentration, control, precision, and flow. The order and transitions are not simply choreography. They create relationships between exercises so that one movement prepares the body for the next and the method develops as a coherent whole.

And lineage should never mean refusing modern knowledge.

Anatomy, biomechanics, neuroscience, rehabilitation, and contemporary movement science can deepen our understanding enormously. But new knowledge does not require us to discard the method. It allows an educated teacher to understand it more deeply and apply it more intelligently.

That is the distinction.

Tradition without understanding becomes imitation.
Innovation without foundation becomes something else entirely.

For me, preserving Pilates does not mean freezing it in time. It means understanding its foundations well enough to know what can evolve without losing the intelligence of the original method.

The apparatus is extraordinary.

But the apparatus was designed to serve the method.

It was never the method itself.
